When I swapped my old mountain bike which had suspension forks and built up the Alice as a touring bike, I needed a rack to carry my front panniers. I wanted something simple but sturdy and the Tubus Tara fitted the bill. With its choice of fitting positions it was easy to attach to the mounting points on my forks.
The design of the rack gives it strength and the bar going over the front wheel keeps the rack rigid. I use it with Ortlieb gravel front panniers which are 12.5 litres each and these fit securely and sit low enough to make for comfortable steering.
The lack of a top rack is not as much of a disadvantage as it may seem. It means I’m not tempted to overload the front end. Previously I would pile gear on untill the steering just became too unsteady and then had to re-think my packing.
