I had been looking to replace my Endura cycle jacket with something a bit warmer for use in autumn and winter weather. The Endura jacket has served me well for a good few years but is beginning to look a bit worse for wear and stretched out. I tend to wear it with a waterproof jacket over the top of it as age has meant it is thinned out and not so windproof as it used to be.
I have a few items of Gore-wear clothing and so when I saw their windproof jacket advertised at less than £100 I reckoned it was a bargain too good to miss. This normally retails at around £160 so getting it for just over £80 was great. This price was for the green version, the black and other colours were still selling at the full price.
The material the jacket is made out of is windproof and breathable. Gore also claim it is reasonably waterproof but as I haven’t tried it out in wet weather, I can’t attest to that just yet. It is fleeced lined and this gives it a good degree of warmth in cooler weather.
The jacket is comfortable and fits well. When I first tried it on I had a first impression that it was going to be too tight across the shoulders. Once I had it on and zipped up, this turned out not to be the case. I had gone for a large and this is great for me. The sleeves and body length are good and round the chest and waist it is very comfortable. Snug but not too tight. The stretch fabric means the jacket moves with me and I don’t get the pulling sensation I have experienced with other jackets.
The cuffs are elasticated and although they have no adjustment, the elastic feels as though it is strong enough to last without the worry of it becoming loose after a while. The collar has a fleece lining which gives it an extra comfort around the throat if the jacket is fully zipped up. There is also an elasticated band on the hem which works well to stop the jacket riding up.
The jacket is equipped with five pockets. Two on the rear, two side pockets and a chest pocket. All of these are zipped and are a good size. The fact that there are both side and rear pockets is a big plus for me as many manufacturers either put in one or the other.
I fully expect the quality of this jacket will do me for many years to come and although it is fairly expensive in my mind it is worth it.
