ergon – gp1 / gs1 – grips

I’ve been using Ergon grips for some time now. I like the ergonomic shape which provides a comfortable rest for my hands and overcomes wrist strain which I found was a problem with straight grips. I have black and grey GP1 grips on my touring bike and these are great for the longer riding days. I also have used biocork GP1s on my mountain bike for a few years. These have also proved to be comfortable but the join between the cork part and the alloy retaining ring is beginning to separate as the grips become worn with use. I haven’t had the same issue with the touring bike as I don’t use it as regularly.

As I’m very happy with the Ergon grips I decided to look at their other models for a replacement. That’s when I came across the GS1 evo. This has evolved as a combination of the GP1 which is designed for touring and Ergon’s mountain bike specific grips. This gives it a comfortable feel but incorporates the “wings” for better support. It also has the retaining ring on the inside of the grip which seems to be less liable to wear at the junction between the grip and the retainer. This is something which I guess I’ll discover over longer useage. The GS1 also comes in a wider range of colours and I have been able to match a pair to my bike.

I have combined the grips with Hope bar-end caps, mainly because I already had some and they provide a more solid-looking alternative to the plastic, but perfectly functional, ones Ergon supply with the grips.
