There are a couple of things about modern cycling equipment that I have never got in to and seem to me to be as much about fashion as function. One of these is drop handlebars and the other is clipless pedals. Even the term “clipless” which means that your feet are clipped into the pedals is enough to put me off. I use flat pedals because I like them and have never felt the need to have my feet attached by some mechanical means or another.
So when I was building my ALICE bike and needed to buy pedals I looked for ones which were good quality, rebuildable but also affordable. I came across a pair of DMR V12 pedals in an unusual colour. I think the colour and them being the end of their availability meant there was a large discount on them so I bought them and fitted them to my bike. They turned out to be a good buy as they are comfotable and the lugs provide enough grip, no matter what shoes I’m wearing, to make me feel secure.
DMR are a UK manufacturer. Their range of pedals is extensive and they make them in several versions with a choice of materials and configurations most of which are fully maintainable. They are not the cheapest pedals available but also not the most expensive.
When I needed to replace the pedals on my MTB becase of a damaged axle I looked at DMR again as I’m an advocate of sticking with a brand I’m happy with. I considered going with the V12s again but found a good deal on a pair of vaults in deep red. These match the colour scheme of the rest of the bike and were discounted so much they were not much more in price than a similar set of V12s. The vault are reviewed at a higher quality but I will wait to see once I have used them a few times.
The main difference between the two models is that the Vault pedals have a larger foot area. This is ideal for the two uses I have for them. The larger area suits the way I ride the MBT and as I usually only ride the ALICE on roads there’s less chance my feet will slip off the pedals.
